You may have noticed a Windows alert today indicating that new updates are available. A record number of patches were released by Microsoft today for numerous products, including every version of Windows since XP. Your antivirus software may also alert you that there is something you need to pay attention to. This is also a great time to make sure your antivirus software is working and updating.
Updates are released the second Tuesday of every month. It’s very important that you install the latest updates your computer as they are released, because they fix flaws in Windows, and the moment updates are released, virus creators create viruses that attack those flaws by analyzing the updates.
Before installing any updates, it’s a good idea to set a System Restore point. You can find the System Restore wizard in the Start Menu under ‘all programs’, ‘accessories’, and ‘system tools’.
To install the updates:
In Windows XP, click the  Start Menu, then ‘all programs’, then find and click ‘Windows Updates’. Internet Explorer will open the Windows Update website. Click ‘custom’, and install all updates that are available, especially the critical ones.
In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Start Menu (the round button in the bottom left corner with the Windows logo). Click ‘all programs’, and click ‘Windows Update’. A window will open and show that updates are available. Click ‘install updates’ to install all available updates.
