‘Just in Case’ vs. ‘Just in Time’

Modern business has long been moving to a ‘Just in Time’ model, which represents great efficiencies, reduces overhead and improves reaction times. Manufacturing companies have especially shown great success by switching to this model, and many other businesses look for ways that they too can take advantage of this strategy.

The opposing model is ‘Just In Case’. For example, you may keep extra inventory on hand to prepare for an unexpected demand for the item, or you may purchase special types of insurance to help your business through an unexpected situation, such as a fire or flood.

In the hosting industry, the ‘Just in Time’ model seems to the prevalent strategy, perhaps the only one that is offered. Providers will offer you 24×7 support if something goes wrong, and that is certainly not a good thing. But is it enough to just wait for something to go wrong?

Imagine this situation – your website is hacked. Since over 3500 websites are hacked daily, this is a very real possibility over the next year for your business. Do you have insurance to handle this situation? Does your hosting provider offer anything to mitigate this possibility? 24×7 support really only jumps into action after you’ve noticed that you have a problem, and then you still have to contact the hosting company to try and have them help you.

Nerds On Site offers NerdCare Assurance as part of a ‘Just in Case’ model. Our team of experts will proactively patch and update your website to reduce your vulnerability to hacking activity as much as possible. Then we’ll follow that up with frequent backups of your entire site. Then, to give you real piece of mind, we’ll scan your entire website every single hour of every single to day to ensure you haven’t been hacked, and jump into action the moment something disastrous happens.

You buy fire insurance, why not NerdCare Assurance for your critical business website? A ‘Just in Time’ attitude will not help your business in the event of a hack, as every moment your website is down translates into lost revenue and a severely damaged public image. A ‘Just in Case’ attitude will mean that a team is prepared and waiting for the moment something goes wrong, as opposed to having to examine and repair after the event.

Hack Detection and Prevention

Yesterday I posted a video exploring the possibility that a website could or would be hacked, and in it we presented some alarming statistics. At the end of the day, the general consensus is that nearly every website is at risk for getting hacked, and that it really is only a matter of time until your website is hacked. In fact, it is a vital part of your business strategy to assume that your site WILL get hacked, and to plan for that eventuality.

Of course, your first step is to have your website scanned for vulnerabilities, and to have as many of these eliminated as possible. Your greatest asset here is an experienced team of developers, which you can find in Nerds On Site, with our development team spread out between 9 countries, and containing experts in security and every type of web technology available. (Contact them for a free chat on your needs, development@nerdsonsite.com.)

However, Nerds On Site goes way beyond what any other team or hosting company would dream of doing. We offer pro-active hacking detection. In protecting your physical inventory, you don’t wait until after your wharehouse is robbed to secure it, but you post guards and install security systems. Nerds On Site takes the same approach by scanning every single one of our clients for defacement activity every single business day. Imagine – a hosting company that will actively check your website’s homepage for you every day, and then will contact you with solutions if there is an issue.

The best news is that Nerds On Site offers even more thourough packages, with two levels of Nerd Care Assurance for our hosting clients. One of our features is a deep-level, file by file scan of your website every single hour of every single day, with cryptographical signatures of every file, so that our team will be immediately notified of even the tiniest change anywhere in your website.

In today’s business reality, where a competent website is vital to your business success, and the hacking of that same website is almost expected, isn’t it time you considered protecting your investment with Nerds On Site’s hack detection and prevention tools? Even more inviting may be the fact that our base defacement detection is absolutely free and included with every hosting account we sell!

Nerds On Site Partners with Dasient

We are happy to announce our partnership with Dasient.Dasient

Today at HostingCon 2009, Dasient launched Mod Anti-Malware Lite, an open source version of its Web Anti-Malware (WAM) remediation technology. Mod
Anti-Malware Lite is an Apache server module that will help site owners, web hosts, and developers protect themselves against the effects of web-based attacks that can compromise their sites and spread malware to their users. Mod Anti-Malware Lite will be made available today at www.dasient.com/partners and www.sourceforge.net.

“Every day, thousands of legitimate websites are infected with malicious code, and the speed, scale, and complexity of these attacks makes it difficult for website owners to identify and address the resulting infections,” said Dr. Neil Daswani, one of Dasient’s three co-founders. “Now more than ever it’s important for site owners to deploy defenses that can operate at the scale and speed required to deal with the problem.”

Dasient is also happy to announce new distribution partnerships with five web hosting providers: Consolidated, Vexxhost, Ultrahosting, and Nerds On Site in North America and Diadem Technologies in India. These partners will be integrating Dasient WAM into their product platforms in the coming months, selling the product to their customers and sharing revenue with Dasient.
