4 Lessons learned from a break-in

I’m a privileged citizen of an incredible country: Canada. I’m naturalized, and like most who are not born here, we have a deeply emotional attachment to our citizenship. We are the most fortunate people on earth! This may sound odd, but my good-night songs to my children is “Oh Canada” (our national anthem). One of the reason we love Canada is because you generally feel safe, don’t need to lock your car or home in many parts of our country and not think twice about it.

Last night some thieves roamed our street and a number of us had our cars cleaned out of valuables.

A neighbour down a few streets called me at 7:02am and said she found some of my family’s ID on the street along with my card so she kindly called me. I raced right over, thanked her, and then noticed bits and pieces that led a clear trail of where the thieves went through our wallets and tossed out receipts, coupons, frequent-buyer cards, etc. The thieves certainly did not cover their tracks!

At 7:20am I get back home with the thieves “unwanted” wallet content that I had recovered, and woke up the rest of my family to inform them of what had just happened. My oldest two boys (7 and 5 years old) immediately went to their knees, and the oldest prayed “Oh God, I hope you have a serious consequence for these people that took our things.” My second son prayed “God, I’m thinking that maybe these people needed daddy’s money more than we do.” Our 5-year old has always been an old soul.

Lesson #1: Keep a wholesome perspective – my kids did that for me today

At 7:30am I checked for forced entry in our family car and there just wasn’t any. I’m an avid Security Now podcast listener, and I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if an 8-year old car’s wireless remote can be hacked. Sure enough, as I’m walking around in my t-shirt and shorts some neighbours start to gather to see who else got cleaned. What!? Not just me! This is getting worse! Could we all have left our cars unlocked? Nobody wanted to admit it.

Lesson #2: Double-check your cars are actually locked

At this point I’m eating humble pie. For years I’ve gently (and sometimes not so gently) reminded my wife about what a bad idea it is to leave a wallet in the car. Last night I forgot mine in my scottevest which I left in her car because she drove me to the chiropractor and back home. Argh!

Lesson #3: Do NOT leave your wallet(s) in your car

Only at this point did we realize that my wife’s iPhone is also missing. We are avid users of Find my iPhone app which we use to find each other instead of calling each other with “Hey, where are you?” as well as the times you’ve set it on vibrate and can’t find your phone in the house. Was I ever grateful for this app when I launched it and it said “45 seconds ago”, indicating how recently it was able to locate the iPhone’s location as shown below. To protect the innocent I’ve blocked the street names:

Lesson #4: Be pro-active and plan for possibility of loss of theft.

I didn’t know this was what I was doing by utilizing the location feature. Note that it’s not just a matter of installing the app, but if you following these simple instructions, you too, can benefit from this great tool!

UPDATE: I accidentally hit ‘publish’ instead of preview, but meant to add that the experience with the London Police was incredible! I called 911 and even though it was not technically an emergency, they were at my place within 30 minutes. The officers immediately confirmed that based on an iPhone location report, they would knock on the doors and speak to the resident and ask questions. They did exactly that, and as it turns out, within 5 minutes I had my wife’s iPhone back! His side of the story was that he actually found it on a lawn on his way home from the bus stop. He had purposefully left it on and was expecting someone to show up or call the phone. Fair enough, the story was believable based on the fact that he found it in the same place as where the “paper trail” ended.

UPDATE 2: A gentleman named Armen turned up at our house tonight and delivered three more pieces of ID from my wife’s wallet that had been found in the neighbourhood. Although none of the pieces of ID had our address on it, he was resourceful to find my address and I’m thankful to Armen for that – FREE Nerds On Site service call to you good sir!

What A Weekend…at the Vancouver Island MusicFest!

Nerds On Site spend the weekend (July 8-10) the Vancouver Island MusicFest! We sponsored the event and provided FREE wireless internet to those in attendance! We had over 821 devices connected overall, transferring over 60 GB of data. In addition, there were 8,500 attendees this year walking past 2 Nerdmobiles parked at the entrance. So, plenty of people saw us! While there, Tim and Dian also worked with CKUA radio and gave them a better connection then they usually have when broadcasting remotely in their home city.

VIMF is a quintessential “west coast fest” featuring roots and world music performers from across Canada and around the globe! It’s 3 days and 6 stages FULL of music, interactive workshops, roving performers, funky crafts and delicious food, on site camping, major eco-initiatives, participatory art projects and more….

Shaw Introduces New Internet Packages – the Highlights

There has been quite a bit of talk on Twitter about Shaw’s new internet packages, which will begin rolling out next month. Many of the tweets are positive and feel Shaw is making the appropriate changes to their network, while being fair to their customers, and enforcing usage caps in a respectful way. You can almost hear the sighs of relief from those who were afraid what would result from Usage Based Billing, as far as Shaw’s offerings, anyway.

These changes address the huge concern of Usage Based Billing (UBB) that has been in the news for months, and is a very controversial issue. Many on Twitter seem to agree that the new plans put Shaw ahead of the other providers in Canada, and shows that they have truly listened and are responding to the concerns many have voiced.

It will be very interesting to see how other providers react to this.

A couple of quotes from Shaw’s website:

“Customers can choose to stay with their existing packaging and pricing except with much higher data levels. Our existing acceptable use policy will remain the same as it is today.” note: this essentially means that when Shaw feels customers are abusing their internet connection, they’ll get warned and eventually cut off.

“Those who go over their data consumption will be placed in the next higher package for the remainder of the month. The following month’s data will be reset and customers will return to their original package unless they choose to stay at the higher level.”

Shaw customers can now track how much data they are using by signing into their online accounts.

Here are some of the tweets:

via @britl: There is no per GB charge in any of the new pricing. #shaw #ubb

via @wunderbar: This is pretty good, very surprised. #shaw seems to actually have almost nailed it. #ubb
via @wunderbar: @T_Baggins current plans will be increased, but new plans will go from 400GB to unlimited. 400GB for the same price as Extreme now. #shaw
via @M_KWAD: Very imp. Speeds -price not so much RT @gregobr With #Shaw‘s new broadband plans, the pressure on #Rogers, #Telus, #Bell will be big #UBB.
via @OpenMedia_ca: #shaw increasing caps & offering unlimited over 17 months. They say they’re doing it by replacing analog tv with digital.
via @camson5: Congrats to #Shaw in for finally listening to Canadians – ups bandwidth cap and provides unlimited options! Also huge speed increases coming.
via @missmyla_: I have to admit, #Shaw‘s new plans are actually quite surprising… Not down w/ forcing TV subscription part, but still progress. #UBB

Financial Support for Business IT upgrades

Many governments around the world offer support programs to businesses, especially ones in manufacturing and export, since those industries can have a larger economic impact.

For example, in Ontario, Canada, in combination with the Federal Government, the SMART program is offered, see:
http://www.cme-smart.ca/

Your regional or federal government may offer similar programs. If your organization is in need of Information Technology, Cloud Computing, Software Development, please ask your nerd for support in your application process for government funding.

We’re here to help!

Niles the Nerd at the London (Canada) Dragonboat Race

It seems that our friend (mascot) Niles the Nerd was having a great time at the London, Ontario Dragonboat Race today!

Thanks to Anthony Berot (one of london’s best computer support nerds!) for providing the internet at the event! We received this picture from one of our Nerds Backup gurus, James Keenleyside-Richter, who was kind enough to bring Niles to the event!

It is always GREAT to see a few red shirts, better still when one of them is our friend Niles!

Great job James and Anthony!

Quick Response from Data Centre Team

One of our Nerds, Anthony B. had this to say…

“Within 1 hour of notifying Jonathan (Online Services Team leader) that a client’s Application server was down, he had the NerdsISP data center team at the server replacing the defective Raid drive. The server went down on Sunday but my only concern was getting it functional by 7:00 am Monday. We had a good backup from Saturday, and a plan to put the backup server into action, but that was not necessary due to the quick response of the Data center team.

Jonathan and the Data Centre team were such good team players!  They did not complain that I sent those emails every two minutes; they just stayed online until the server was online and confirmed that all was well.

Thanks to teamwork, the only knowledge the client have of this incident is the email I sent them.”
